UK Student Loans
For those of you who currently have outstanding UK student loans, and were or still are a teacher who was accepted onto the Repayment of Teachers Loans scheme, I just want to take a second to get you to check your last statement. First of all are you aware that the statement you receive each year is already almost a year out of date by the time that you get it ! I was accepted onto this scheme but was only teaching on a part time basis so the amount that I was eligible to have written off was reduced. Part way through my third year teaching I was made redundant due to a cut in funding at the establishment I worked for, which resulted in the closure of a whole curriculum area (and many redundancies, not just mine). I notified the SLC accordingly and in May 2007 received my annual statement which seemed to be correct as far as I could tell. This year I received my next statement which contained only two entries, one of which was a large balance adjustment which meant my account was now higher than at any stage since I took out the loan ! I knew the interest on these had gone up last year but this was ridiculous. There was no explanation and the entry merely stated "balance adjustment". So I telephoned them to ask what this entry was about and how the new figure had been calculated. The first response I received to this was verbal and the lady told me that even though she couldn't see the figures herself it was correct and that the adjustment was due to the fact I had left the RTL scheme. I informed her I had not left the scheme but been forced by my circumstances to go on to a break as I am not currently teaching. I also queried the amount as the amount which had been added back was almost as much as had ever been written off whilst I was working ! She told me if I was not happy with her explanation I would have to write in to query it further. I visited the website and managed to find a contact email for queries so I wrote down all my concerns and mailed it in. This time I received a written response from the department which showed some caluculations but still declared the overall figure to be correct and that I was no longer part of the scheme. In the end I had to go through the official complaints process to get any kind of sensible explanation to the statement I had been sent. I also went this far as I wanted them to acknowledge that I had not left the scheme and that once I can obtain another suitable teaching position, then I hope to be back where I was with some of my payments being made for me ! I finally did get this resolved to my satisfaction but it took about six weeks. So wrote this all down so that if any of you ever find yourself in a similar situation then question it. It would be all too easy to just accept what they say without question and be deprived of what is rightfully yours. Also, do check if you are nearing completion of paying back your loan, as I am also aware of people who have continued to have deductions made even when they no longer owe anything, because of the delay in being given up to date statements.
