Spelling - Is it important ?
Well here is another one of those questions that keeps coming up whenever the subject of English Language and teaching the subject is mentioned. People always ask about spelling and whether it is important. To which I always reply with a resounding "Yes" it is important. I hear many horror stories which include schools and teachers who have told pupils not to worry about the spellings in their written work. Many have also gone on to say that it won't matter as pc's all have spell checkers as part of their software and therefore the pupils will be able to correct anything that is not right by using the software. Surely though the whole point is how would you know if it's not correct if you were never taught to spell properly in the first place ? I know that many people now use text messages to communicate and this has led to a lot more abbreviations being used and then spilling over from texting into normal written work. I have no problem with using abbreviations when texting, but like slang words I don't think that they should become part of the standard english dictionary.
After all our language is part of our heritage and if we allow it to become used in this way then eventually it will change forever. There are still many situations where it may not be practical to write using a pc or where it is still required that you use more formal language in order to communicate. These are skills that people should be taught, otherwise they will lose the ability to be able to cope in these kind of situations. They will become totally reliant on their pc and spell checker and may not be able to write an important letter when they need to. I for one will be doing my small bit to try and ensure that this never happens. By all means use the latest technology, but don't forget the skills that you had before it came along. |
