Don't Give Up

There is quite a bit of doom and gloom going on at the moment. Bankruptcies, takeovers, redundancies, mortgage rate increases... you name it, the media reports about it. Then there are the knife crimes, boozers roaming the streets at night, divorce rates going up, the gap between poor and rich widening... enough to make one despair. If you have just started out in business or are into your second year of trading and things aren't going quite to plan then the above isn't exactly encouraging. But what I want to say to you is: don't give up! Don't believe everything that is written in the papers or that you see on the evening news. Stick to your guns, persevere, believe in yourself and what you are doing. Things take time. Take for example my business, I wouldn't describe it as "successful" in the usual sense. What it is is - it is growing. Slowly but surely. There are ups and downs even after 3 years of trading. There are days and weeks when sales are sluggish and orders are cancelled, goods are being returned for no apparent reason (other than handbags are used at weddings and then returned....). I work long hours. True, I get up at 8 am and start work at around 9.30 -10 am. But because I work on my own and I do everything - bar my web design - myself, my working day rarely ends at 5pm. In fact most days I go to bed well after midnight. However, I really enjoy what I am doing and I have learned a lot since I started . I am also blessed with a good education and a common sense (ahem, some people might not agree because I have been known to ask silly questions and then some). And I firmly believe that one day it will be such a success that I can live off the income easily. It is a struggle and it is hard at times and I have debts but I am not going to give up because I believe that what I am selling is not only of superior quality it also helps other people earn an income and that are worse off than me, and that in itself gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than the prospect of "hitting the big time". If you are at a cross roads with your business and you are thinking of throwing in the towel - think again. There is always a solution to a problem, whether it means changing direction in terms of a service or a product you are selling, getting outside help, obtaining funding or just talking things through with a mentor. Nobody said it would be easy, but do you think you would have job guarantee and so much fun being employed? Life is about changes. You have to know when to make them and be brave. Don't listen to the moaners and try and stay away from negative influences and people who want to see only bad things and pull you down. Go and chat to someone. It has given me huge support and confidence and I found some true friends. When I feel less motivated than usual I come on the internet and read other people's blogs or join into discussions and it always gives me a huge boost - in confidence, morale, mood and courage. I know I am not alone and I know I can make it. Come out of your shell, participate and share your knowledge, anxieties, thoughts and wisdom. Offer your help and be helped. And above all - don't be ashamed to admit that you have fears and that you need help, feel lonely and deserted or you just need someone to talk to. Don't throw your dream away just because it is a long and stony road to success. |
