Are Multiple Income Streams the way forward ?

Having just read and rated some intel on multiple income streams I thought I would share my experiences with you.

I began my working life in the 80's and although my first job was not my first choice of career I decided to stick with it to see where it lead and if it would open further doors in the future. The company was a well known high street retailer although I worked as part of the distribution network that supported this rather than in the store itself.

I learned a tremendous amount whilst I was with this company. My first role was as the office junior but I soon progressed and was given more responsibililty. I became an office supervisor and in time went on to supervise other more complex departments. In my last role in this company I actually lead two seperate departments at the same time.

When I started work there I had no IT skills at all but through my work I gained a wealth of experience in this area too, and finally became the supervisor of a complex operating system that ran a whole distribution centre operation.

I was always happy when I was at work there.
Then it happened, the company decided to rationalise their operations, and as my location was fairly remote from their head offices and other sites, they decided that it would be the site that would have to close. I was devastated but tried to put a brave face on it. When I finally took my redundancy package I had worked there for over 19 years.

Although it took me a few months to find another job at least I had my redundancy payment so I was lucky and did not struggle financially during that time.

However, I naively believed that the next job I found would last for a similar amount of time, but of course that wasn't to be. Again my role was with a well known company, this time in the IT sector. Again I really loved it and felt that I settled in there really quickly.
This time it lasted for a much shorter time - 3 years to be exact. Only just long enough for me to receive any form of redundancy payment when again I was forced to leave.

I wasn't so upset this time as I had a strange sense of deja vu, but also the belief that something else would come along. Luckily it did and I became self employed in a teaching role. I found that I really liked this and in the end it was my own decision to leave this position and take up one which would allow me to study for further teaching qualifications whilst also expanding my teaching experience. It turned out to be well worth the effort and I graduated over a year ago now. Since then there has always been some role that I can take and I have really enjoyed all of them.

However, I also learned that I would never entrust my future security to just one role or by working for only one company. Therefore the majority of these roles I've taken have always been on a self employed basis.
This has allowed me to work on more than one job at a time sometimes. I even started a multi level marketing scheme and built my own small team. This means that this always ticks along in the background and earns me something even if I don't actually sell anything myself !

I have decided through learning the hard way that multiple income streams are definately the way of the future and I will never put "all my eggs in one basket" ever again.

I hope this helps anyone who is either starting out on their career, or anyone who currently has one single form of income. Please consider taking on something else too as it may well save you from severe hardship at a later date.
